OutdoorNebraska.gov | 45 N amed for the winter camp used by Mormon emigrants in 1884-85, the 152-acre Mormon Island SRA is another highly-developed area in the chain of lakes along I-80. Located at the U.S. 281 exit at Grand Island, Mormon Island SRA sits on the eastern edge of the great spring sandhill crane migration in the central Platte River Valley. Camping facilities include Electric Plus, Electric and Basic campsites, two shower houses and three modern restrooms, a dump-and-fill station, drinking water, picnic tables, grills, picnic shelters, unsupervised swimming beach, and two boat ramps. Boats are restricted to 5 mph on Lake #1 and Lake #2. There is a 31-acre Lake owned by the Department of Transportation with walk-in fishing access from the east boundary of the park. FISHING All fishing lakes offer excellent opportunities to catch largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish. Lake #1 offers muskie fishing. WILDLIFE VIEWING Mormon Island State Recreation Area has abundant wildlife and offers good wildlife viewing opportunities all year long, particularly along the Platte River. In spring, hundreds of thousands of sandhill cranes stop to rest and pursue their courtship rituals close to the park and in surrounding fields.
