18 2025–2030 SCORP NEBRASKA'S OUTDOOR RECREATION PRIORITIES The Good Life Support, advance and seek outdoor recreation resources that facilitate positive impacts on Nebraskans' quality of life. Parks, trails and outdoor recreation opportunities are major drivers in determining the quality of life in a community. Numerous studies have shown spending time outside recreating not only promotes physical fitness but also improves mental health and can foster community and social interactions. Parks also play a key role in the economic stability and growth in communities and the state. According to 2024 estimates, the annual economic impact of outdoor recreation in Nebraska is more than $4 billion (cite the 2024 Game and Parks annual report). These all contribute to The Good Life. The Good Life Recommendations Enhance Nebraskans' physical and mental health: • Spending time outdoors has a strong impact on both physical and mental health. The public health benefits of recreating outdoors include reducing stress, connecting with nature, exercise and social interaction. » Use outdoor recreation resources and development as a tool to help achieve community health and wellness goals. » Consider ways to partner with local health care providers and facilities to get more people involved. » Identify and prioritize new and emerging recreational opportunities. » Develop outdoor recreation opportunities that support physical and mental health. » Promote life-long recreation activities. » Outdoor recreation that is free or low cost and can be easy to access.
