2025–2030 SCORP 23 SUCCESS STORY Revitalizing Adams Park – A Model of Community Spirit and Strategic Growth Nestled on the east side of the Village of Adams, in southeast Nebraska, Adams Park has become a shining example of how grassroots involvement, visionary planning, and collaborative partnerships can transform a small-town park into a vibrant hub of recreation, community, and pride. The journey began in 2014 with a simple request: a community member proposed adding a new concession stand and restroom to the local ballfield. From that modest idea, a comprehensive revitalization plan took shape over the following decade. Beginning in 2015, village board meetings were held to discuss the project, culminating in a formal park needs assessment in 2018. Partnering with the Southeast Nebraska Development District (SENDD) for the assessment, the community identified the Adams Park amenity priorities and outlined a Master Plan. The creation of the Growing Adams Park (GAP) committee galvanized local stakeholders— from the Village Board and employees to the Adams Community Foundation, Sportsman's Club, American Legion, and Adams Ball Association. Together, in 2020 they secured a Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grant and a Nebraska State Department of Economic Development's Civic and Community Center Financing Fund (CCCFF) grant, jumpstarting the revitalization effort. Construction began in earnest with the 2022 launch of the new concession stand and batting cages, followed by the 2023 completion of upgraded ballfields, sidewalks, and parking areas. These improvements set the stage for hosting tournaments, bringing in visitors, increasing local sports participation, and boosting the village economy. As Adams Park development grew, so did community involvement. Students contributed through "Pennies for Parks" and spirit days fundraisers, while residents showed overwhelming support by passing a 1% sales tax in 2024. A significant local donation, made in memory of a beloved teacher and tennis enthusiast, ensured the inclusion of sports courts in the final phase. With the final phase underway in 2025, Adams Park added a walking trail, upgraded field backstops and netting, a third ballfield, an additional batting cage, restrooms near the playground, and multi-use sports courts featuring four basketball hoops and two combination tennis/pickleball courts. The park's continued success is supported by village staff and a deep-rooted sense of ownership across generations. Thanks to intentional community driven planning, Adams Park is now a place where residents of all ages can enjoy healthy, active lifestyles in a space built by and for their community. Adams Park isn't just a recreational facility, it's a testament to what can be accomplished when a village dreams together, plans together, and builds together.
