United States Access Board Accessibility
Standards for Federal Outdoor Developed Areas:
The Architectural and Transportation Barriers
Compliance Board (Access Board) developed the
accessibility guidelines for trails, camping and
picnic facilities, viewing areas, and beach access
routes through extensive public input from the
disability community, federal land management
agencies, and other interested individuals and
organizations. www.access-board.gov/files/aba/

Trail Plans and Specifications: The USDA Forest
Service Standard Trail Plans and Specifications
are for the design, construction, and
maintenance of National Forest System trails
and trail bridges. These plans and specifications
also are available for other federal, state,

USDA Accessibility Guidebook for Outdoor
Recreation and Trails: This guidebook was
written to help designers and managers by
providing guidance for integrating accessibility
into outdoor recreation sites and trail projects.
When recreation professionals understand what
is needed, accessibility becomes integrated into
the thinking, planning, designing, construction,
and maintenance of every project from the
beginning. Accessibility always is more difficult
and costly to implement as an afterthought.
