LIFECYCLE OF A TRAIL PROJECT
The process and timelines for trail projects
can vary widely depending on their size,
conditions, complexity, available funding, and
jurisdiction. Consider the Lifecycle of a Trail
Project diagram on the next page in relation to
your project. Brief explanations of each step are
provided in the diagram. You will find details
within each step section of the guide. For each of
the project lifecycle steps that you identify, the
following questions may be helpful in figuring
out your project needs.
• Is this step required for your project?
• What expertise is required for this step?
(Such as an engineer.)
• Does the land manager have the needed
capability, expertise, resources, and time for
this step?
• Does your group or organization have the
capacity, expertise, resources, and time to
accomplish or help with this step?
• Do you have the information needed about a
step (such as cost) to help line up resources
for it ahead of time?
• Does the step have an established timeline
that you need to consider? (Such as a
required period for public comment, a grant
process schedule, or specific season for
construction.)
