COMMUNITY
ENGAGEMENT
Trail project plans that
incorporate community
engagement have higher
rates of implementation. The
community involvement helps
create a shared vision and
sense of ownership in
the project.
PROPOSAL
It will take research
and many conversations
with your team and
partners to move your
great idea into a
clear proposal.
ASSESS
WHERE YOU ARE
Determine where the
starting point is for
the project. What is
your vision?
BUILD
YOUR TEAM
No one person can
make the trail project
happen; it takes a team
pulling together.
Who will be on
your team?
LAND
ACQUISITION
Does your trail
project require
land purchases,
agreements, or
easements?
FUNDING
Determine what
steps in your project
have costs associated
with them and consider
where and when you
could acquire the
needed funding.
CONSTRUCTION
The construction of
your trail project. Will the
land manager be able to
accomplish this project with
staff and/or volunteers,
or is this a project that
needs to be put
out to bid?
STEWARDSHIP
Stewardship is
the long-term plan
for managing,
maintaining, and
funding the trail.
DESIGN
Design entails
identifying specifications
of the trail and depending
on the size and complexity
of your project, it may
include amenities such as
trailhead and parking
lot, wayfinding
signage, etc.
