ACQUIRING FUNDING Once you have a project proposal together and have an idea of what phases will need funding, you will be able to use the proposal to leverage funding. Identifying the range of community benefits the project will provide does two things. It will help make the case for the trail and will guide in identifying, and securing, the most appropriate funding sources. Think through the following potential benefits as you compile your list of benefits. • Community desire: Does the trail meet an established need or want of your community? • Transportation safety: Does the trail provide off-street connections to neighborhoods, schools, parks, business districts, community centers, etc.? Does it provide a safer alternative to people walking or biking on a roadway? Does it give off-highway vehicle (OHV) users or equestrians a place to recreate safely? • Public health: Would the trail serve a target population such as youth, seniors, people with disabilities, low-income community members, and/or those most likely to experience health disparities? • Accessibility: Does the trail address a need for more ADA access for outdoor recreation? • Economic: Would the trail project create jobs in construction or tourism, or bring other economic development benefits to the community? • Equity and inclusion: Does the trail project look to inclusive partnering and development? Is equity in race, disability, gender, sexuality, and identity included in the goals of the project? • Access to nature: Will the trail provide public access to green space, water, or important local habitat? • Education: Does the trail provide opportunities for outdoor education? • Connectivity: Would the trail connect people to recreational places, nature, or other trails?
