DESCRIBE YOUR PROJECT Where is your project located? • Is your project location within a specific district, management zone, development area, NRD district, etc.? • Is the proposed trail a permitted land use in this location? • Does it go through private land or culturally sensitive areas? • Is the proposed route in a floodplain? • What are the current or previous uses of the land along your proposed route? • Have you identified the land manager? • Is it in an urban or rural area? • Do people live next to the proposed route? • Would the trail cross anything that would affect construction or use? This can include roads, rivers, creeks, railroads, wetlands, school property, culturally sensitive areas, etc. • Where is the nearest established trail like the one you are proposing? What are the key elements of your project? • Is this a new trail, trail system, or connector? • Is the proposal for a modification of an existing trail? • Are there ADA elements or upgrades? • What about bridges or other major constructed features that will require additional funding and maintenance? • What is the total mileage? • Are there trail side amenities? • Does your trail connect desired locations or provide an alternative transportation route? • Does your trail commemorate something or provide interpretation of an area? • What elements does it have to meet the needs of your expected users? • Are you including interpretative or educational elements or signage? • Will it offer camping opportunities? Who are the intended users? • Will the trail accommodate multiple users? Walkers and hikers? Motorized users such as ATVs? Equestrians, bikers, or snow sports? • Will the trail accommodate persons with physical limitations or using adaptive equipment? • What level of users are being served? Beginners, advanced, a combination? • In what ways are the public involved in the project process? • What barriers are there to utilize your trail? Think about equipment needed, difficulty to access, high skill required to use, etc. • How will users get to your trail? Is it safe to walk/bike/roll to or will they need to drive? Consider your trail users! Design a trail that can facilitate a wide array of mobility devices. 13 CREATE A PROJECT PROPOSAL
