Consider the following list of potential stakeholders or roles to include on your team. These roles can be filled by core team members or people who join the team to aid with the specific role in a technical or advisory capacity. These team members do not need to be experts. They need to have enough knowledge to ask the right questions and investigate the answers. One person can fill more than one role and roles can be shared. Some of the roles may be filled through partnerships, such as with the land manager. It is all about what works for your team. You do not need to have all the roles filled to move forward. Also, not all projects will need all these roles. Some projects may need all of these and more, depending on the complexity of the project. This list is to guide you in thinking through the needs of your project and who you may want to recruit to be part of your team. • Fundraiser • Engineer, Planning and Design • General Contractor • Local Government and Community Leaders • Land Management Agencies • Public Outreach and Engagement • Communication and Marketing • Local Trail Users, Clubs, and Groups • Local University and Schools • Tourism and Visitor Bureau • Outdoor Recreation Shops, Outfitters, and Local Businesses • Legal Advisor • Public Health Department • Trail/User Advocacy Groups • Cultural Resource Entities Approach all potential stakeholders and partners with curiosity about their goals, needs, and concerns. What can you learn from them? Stakeholders can be the best champions and cheerleaders for your project. They can also become, or lead you to, great partners. Look to bring together different trail user groups or recreational groups because that can lead to more holistic conversations about the project. Making a long-term commitment to partner groups builds and maintains trust which will pay dividends in maintaining the trail and even growing the trail network in the future.
