LINCOLN, Neb. – Experience prairie wildlife and enjoy time together as a family at a bioblitz to be held July 13 at Denton Prairie.
A bioblitz is an intense period of biological surveying in an attempt to record all the living species within a designated area. Attendees will have fun exploring the outdoors as they count as many living things as possible in three hours, with teams looking for birds, insects, plants and more.
“Bioblitzes are a unique chance to learn about the diversity of plants and animals in the area from local wildlife experts,” said Nebraska Game and Parks Commission wildlife biologist Alie Mayes. “It is amazing just how many species you can identify in such a short time.”
The day will begin at 7 a.m. with a bird banding demonstration. Check-in for the bioblitz begins at 8:30 a.m. and participants will begin looking for species around 9 a.m. The event ends at noon. Water and snacks will be available; participants are encouraged to bring their own water bottles.
Denton Prairie is a part of the Prairie Corridor on Haines Branch, a unique tallgrass prairie passage featuring important prairie habitat and a trail system that connects Pioneers Park Nature Center to Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center.
Denton Prairie is located at the corner of Cass and W. 2nd Street in Denton. Park at the Denton Community Center, 7115 Lancaster Ave., and walk two blocks southwest to the prairie.
The event is a partnership of the Prairie Corridor on Haines Branch, Game and Parks, Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center, Lincoln Parks and Recreation, Lower Platte South NRD and the Village of Denton.
