LINCOLN, Neb. – Improvements recently completed at Bassway Strip Wildlife Management Area enhance access to the Platte River’s north channel for canoeists and kayakers.
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission enlarged, reshaped and surfaced with river rock an existing primitive boat landing to facilitate easier and safer river access. In addition, a parking area was expanded and resurfaced with gravel. The improved launch site also provides emergency responders quicker access to the river.
The canoe and kayak landing is located at the entrance to Bassway Strip, approximately 100 yards east of Nebraska Highway 10. The landing now serves as the lowermost access point on the recently developed Kearney Water Trail. The trail, established in 2016 by the Kearney Whitewater Association and the City of Kearney, utilizes portions of the Kearney Canal and Turkey Creek before it eventually joins with the Platte River.
There currently are two developed public landings along the water trail within the Kearney city limits, allowing access to 2.4 miles of stream. The Bassway Strip landing significantly increases the length of the water trail by opening an additional 7 miles of stream for paddling enthusiasts.
Bassway Strip is located east of Kearney in Buffalo County near Interstate 80 exit 279.
