Hiking is a supportive activity for your heart and body as well as a much needed chance to recharge your mind. Recreationally walking through nature plays into all of your senses. You will become enchanted by the sound of a bird symphony while simultaneously watching the ocean of leaves dancing on the trees by the same breeze that you feel blowing through your hair. Hiking is a way to tap into the explorative side of ourselves we treasured as a kid. Hiking can be as challenging as you make it but never the less, feelings of accomplishment and tranquility will be your take away. With National Trails Day next Saturday, it is the perfect time to plan a hike!
Pick a Trail
Nebraska’s State Park system contains hundreds of miles of trails for all skill levels. Nebraska Game and Parks’ website highlights many recommended trails. Chart out your distances beforehand to be most prepared. Figure out if you will need a park permit if you plan to drive your vehicle to park trailheads.
Find a Hiking Buddy
Hiking is a wonderful family and friend activity. For safety, you should never hike alone.
Check the Weather
Always check the weather before you venture out on a hike. This will help you determine what to wear and what to pack for. No one wants to get caught off guard to bad weather.
Dress Properly
Wear sturdy but comfortable shoes and socks. Wear head protection such as a hat to help shield you from the sun. Breathable clothes will offer you comfort. Sunscreen and bugspray are good things to apply before a hike. Binoculars and a camera are also great accessories.
Pack a Bag
Packing the essentials is a much needed part of a hike. The essentials for a day hike would include, but is not limited to: a map of the area, extra clothing, a poncho, first aid kit, healthy snacks, plenty of water, a compass, a working flashlight, matches, an emergency whistle, a pocket knife, and sun protection.
Get Out There
The Nebraska backcountry is waiting for you to discover it. You will be amazed by the plants and animals you see along the rustic dirt trails offered to you. You are your own adventure setter. So what are you waiting for? National Trails Day is on Saturday, June 3. Nebraska Game and Parks hopes to see you out there!
