LINCOLN, Neb. – Three public hearings will take place when the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission meets June 22 in Gering. The meeting will start at 8 a.m. in the Gering Civic Center, 1050 M St.
The first hearing will allow for public input on the creation of regulations for the Killdeer Wildlife Management Area (WMA) sight-in range in Lancaster County, and the restriction of centerfire rifles or handguns on a portion of Bordeaux Creek WMA in Dawes County.
Public hearings will be held for administrative changes to rules regarding season dates, bag limits, possession limits, open areas and shooting hours for game birds (not including turkey, coots and migratory waterfowl), furbearers, cottontails and squirrels. Hearings will be held for staff recommendations to create commission orders for those rules and to subsequently remove those from regulations. Staff recommendations do not include changes to season dates, bag and possession limits, open areas or shooting hours for upland game at the June meeting. However, changes may be considered in the future.
Commissioners will also hear updates about expanded activities at state parks and recreation areas across the state; on bighorn sheep research; and on outreach efforts to promote outdoor recreation opportunities in Nebraska.
Additionally, commissioners will: consider the ratification of the biennium budget, consider decreasing the cash change fund at Schramm Park State Recreation Area’s Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium, and hear from a private landowner on the impacts of increasing elk populations.
