Lincoln — Deer hunters interested in hunting at Gifford Point Wildlife Management Area this year may apply for access permits until July 31.
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will authorize 200 permits allowing deer hunters access to the area. To be eligible to apply for these permits, hunters must have at least one of the following valid deer permits: statewide archery, muzzleloader, youth or antlerless only season choice Wahoo. Gifford Point WMA is closed to the use of rimfire and centerfire weapons. Muzzleloaders are not allowed during the November firearm season.
The access permit allows access to take deer with a bow and arrow from Sept. 1, 2016 to Jan. 15, 2017 and with muzzleloader from Dec. 1, 2016 to Jan. 15, 2017 as is specified by the deer hunting permit. Successful applicants will be issued a key for the access gate to the wildlife area. Only hunters holding valid access authorization will be allowed on the area for scouting and hanging tree stands starting Aug. 15 through the end of Nebraska’s deer seasons.
Deer hunters may apply as “buddies,” which ensures that either both or neither will draw an access permit. Only two persons may apply as buddies and both applications must be submitted in the same envelope. A buddy permit does not allow party hunting. Each individual must harvest his or her own animal.
Vehicle access will be limited to the rock road directly adjacent to the 8-foot high deer fence on Educational Service Unit property. Only foot access to the interior of the area is allowed.
Application forms are available at the Game and Parks offices at Omaha, Lincoln, Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium and Schilling WMA. If more than 200 applications are received, a drawing will be held Aug. 3 at the Commissions Lincoln office.
