OPPORTUNITY ACCESS STEWARDSHIP
Expanding Opportunity — Urban Fisheries
The Standing Bear Lake aquatic restoration and angler
access project in Omaha was completed in 2024, and
demonstrates Game and Parks' commitment to restoring
urban lakes, improving recreation, and ensuring Nebraska's
aquatic resources thrive for future generations.
The project, launched 2023, addressed deteriorating
infrastructure, including the boat ramp, dock and access
points; poor fish habitat; and undesirable fish, including the
common carp, which had overtaken the lake. The reservoir
was drawn down to remove unwanted fish and repair the
shoreline, while a new boat ramp, kayak launch, jetties and
shoals were added to enhance angler access and improve
fish habitat.
The lake was then restocked with bass, bluegill, walleye, and
channel catfish — all raised at Game and Parks hatcheries —
to create a healthier, more sustainable fishery.
