Sandhill Lakes

January 29, 2024 daryl bauer

I hesitate to post this on my blog because I do not have any new information.  On the other hand, I continue to hear lots of questions and a lot of misinformation about our sandhill lakes. . . .

Yes, the winter of 2022-2023 was a hard one and we saw widespread winterkill on sandhill lakes.  We saw winterkill on lakes that have not had an event like that in a long, long time.  So, yes, there are some lakes where the fishing is not going to be very good this winter.  However, there are still fish to be caught in the sandhills and some big ones!

Also, I know that ice conditions are changing with the warming trend we are currently seeing.  But, I am betting that we ain’t done ice fishing this winter.

Anywho, I said all of that to say this:  I am reposting this summary of the winterkill situation after LAST winter.  That should give you a good idea of where to start your search this winter:

Surveys by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission show many Sandhills lakes fared better than expected after a harsh winter led to fish kills.

Deep snow over thick ice this winter caused oxygen depletion in many of the region’s most shallow and vegetated lakes, causing fish and the plants they rely upon for survival to die.

As surveys are completed, Game and Parks is developing a stocking plan to replenish the fish populations where needed.

Anglers looking for the most recent information about winterkill surveys may follow the Nebraska Fishing Facebook page. They also can contact Game and Parks fisheries biologists at the Alliance, Valentine and Norfolk offices.
