Nebraska Game and Parks Commission receives national attention for GIS program

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission was recently honored with the Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award by Esri, an international supplier of geographic information system software.

The Commission is one of only 180 organizations selected from more than 300,000 eligible candidates around the world to receive this special recognition.

This special award recognizes the Commission’s outstanding collections of maps, applications and, in particular, its open data portal, which makes authoritative GIS data available to the public in a variety of formats. The Commission’s GIS team has proactively provided maps and geospatial information to its customers for more than two decades. To meet the needs of hunters, anglers, park visitors and others who use their maps, Game and Parks implemented an Enterprise GIS system that centralizes data, promotes collaboration, and provides a platform that citizens, state and federal agencies and private organizations can access in order to build maps, create applications and view geospatial data.

“The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission strives to meet the changing needs of the public and to keep up with new technologies,” said Game and Parks Director Jim Douglas. “I am extremely proud of our GIS team and everyone on staff who has helped make this valuable information accessible.”

The data portal may be accessed at data.outdoornebraska.gov. Additionally, a gallery of interactive maps is available at maps.outdoornebraska.gov.
