Our Aquatic Habitat Program has completed projects from one corner of the state to the other. I try to note those accomplishments frequently here on my blog. In conjunction with one of our consulting firms, JEO Consulting, here is a video of recent work that has been completed on Long Pine Creek:
If you have not been to Long Pine Creek, there is quite a bit of public access there, Trout Fishing in Nebraska’s Streams. The video highlights some of the work that has been done on the Pine Glen wildlife area. That area is the most “wild” of the public access areas. Right now I am sure you will find that snow and road conditions are making access to that area difficult. A person has to hike to get to the stream there. Fortunately, there is easier access to the Long Pine State Recreation Area and the Long Pine wildlife area immediately downstream of that. Those stretches also have plenty of fish. I might have even dried off and released a fish or three there within the past month or two (wink, wink).
Cold-water streams are a limited resource in Nebraska. They are extremely valuable resources. So valuable that we have an in-stream flow appropriation on Long Pine Creek. That appropriation was the first of its kind in the state. It will ensure there is water in the stream for fish and wildlife.
Fish habitat improvement projects have been done on Long Pine Creek in the past. In addition to the work recently done on the Pine Glen area, habitat work has been completed on the Long Pine SRA. That area needed some work following the great floods of 2019.
