If you have read my blog for a while, you know that I get side-tracked from fishing every year when the turkeys are gobbling. Spring is a great time in Nebraska’s outdoors except for one thing: There is so much to do and so little time! Once I finally satisfy my spring turkey addiction for a while, I wander around picking mushrooms:
I did not have a good mushroom year. I think it has been too dry.
Then, as I have mentioned several times in the past few weeks, the fish are biting! Time to get back on the water!
Again, there are so many fish and they are all biting, so it is hard to know where to pick up. This spring, one day when the wind was just right, I started by slipping out and drying off a few walleyes.
I would show you a picture of a wiper too, but it flopped back in the water while I was fooling with the camera.
You should not have to strain your eyes to see the bait used to catch that fish. Yes, good ole fashioned bucktail jigs still work. The fish were inhaling them. Thanks, Andrew, those jigs are the best!
This time of year I like to ease back into things with some panfish. I caught a bunch of bluegills and a crappie or two. Swung by a spot for some redears.
I caught one just short of ten inches long; could not find any bigger.
Have not been “out west” recently, but I can tell you my nephew and his kids found some nice sunfish out that way. In fact, bigger than what I caught!
Yes, I believe in passing it on! Hauled my nephews on several fishing trips over the years. Now, they are passing it on to their kids!

Speaking of passing it on, I have not been on the water with my son for a few weeks. However, it is always good to know he is drying off a few himself!
Would have had a muskie photo to show you, but he lost that fish. It happens.
That is fairly representative of what I have been saying the past several weeks. The fish are biting, a variety of species at a variety of waters! Do not wait for a fishing report, right now GO FISH! Do not pass “Go”, do not collect $200, just GO FISH.
As we roll into summer the bite is going to slow. It does every summer, it is nature’s way. However, you still have time, get out and get on the water, NOW!
No fish were harmed in the making of this blog post, all were released. We are going to catch them again!
The mushrooms were picked, they will be eaten!
