Ice Fishing Boots

We just had the classroom ice fishing clinic in Kearney last Saturday.  At that clinic every year we spend at least some time talking about staying warm.  You will never enjoy ice-fishing if you are cold.  Of course layering is the key and there is a lot of excellent clothing on the market these days made just for layering, just for ice fishing!

Another critical part of staying warm is good boots!  Good boots are especially important because, well, while ice fishing you are always standing on the ice!  We also usually spend some time talking about good boots and I try to show an example or three.  Then this week, I was on the interwebs and found a story exactly about good ice fishing boots.  So, let me be lazy and link to it here in my blog.  Follow the link, read the story, I cannot do a better job of telling you about good ice-fishing boots:

I often tell attendees at my clinics or seminars that I am not sponsored by anyone.  I am not on anyone’s “field staff”.  However, I will tell you what has worked for me and I will mention brand names.  The article I referenced highly recommended Sorel boots.  Sorels have been my ice-fishing boots for a long, long time.  In my opinion, they are very hard to beat.

Back in the day, I fooled with electric socks.  I never liked them.  In my opinion none of them ever worked as advertised.  Now, I expect the electric socks and boot liners on the market are a whole lot better, but I have tried to use boots that are good enough that I do not need any electric socks or foot warmers.  However, you might want to give them a try, find something that works for you.

Spending a lot of money is not required to get started ice fishing.  That is true.  On the other hand, in this modern age of ice fishing you cannot ignore all the gear, clothing, electronics, rods & reels, baits, etc., etc.  They will make ice fishing easier and help you catch more fish.  Yes, you will invest some hard-earned money on that equipment.  If you see the need for it, and you can afford it, you will get what you pay for.  A good pair of ice-fishing boots will cost some money, but they will last a long time, and warm toes on the ice are worth every penny of it!
