LINCOLN, Neb. – People of all ages and skill levels now can enjoy guided horseback rides at Fort Kearny State Recreation Area.

The rides, which became available Aug. 1, last one to two hours and feature a 3-mile trail winding through tallgrass prairie.

Nine horses and three ponies are available. Rides are for ages 7 and up, and cost $30 per person. No riding experience is needed.

The new attraction is offered in conjunction with Christine’s Horseback Riding. Company owner Christine Wilson is a 4-H judge and Certified Riding Instructor with the Girl Scouts of Nebraska, with over 40 years of riding and teaching experience.

Wilson already has seen a good response from park guests, she said.

“People from all over the world who stop overnight at Fort Kearny come to ride,” she said.

Park superintendent Gene Hunt said that staff are excited to finally offer horseback riding to the public.

“Fort Kearny has long been a jewel in our state park system, but this new attraction adds the opportunity to experience the park in a different light, while allowing visitors to spend more time enjoying the outdoors with family and friends,” Hunt said. “The addition of trail ride opportunities also pays homage to the park’s history as a home station for Pony Express riders.”

Registration is required. For more information and to register, call 308-320-4908. A valid Nebraska park entry permit is required of each vehicle entering the park.
