Crazy, So What?

It is springtime in Nebraska.  If you are serious about fishing, you are going to be on the water during some abhorrent weather conditions.  Otherwise, well, otherwise you ain’t fishing enough:

Of course, if you are on the water like you should be, then folks think you are crazy:

WinterFish

I had a day like that already this spring:

IceGuides

The best part about it?  No one else fishing!

However, this gentleman came swimming by, literally right by my feet:

Muskrat1

He thought I was crazy, I know he did because he swam right by me, then noticed me, did a double-take, and turned around to take another look.  Look in his eyes, “Are you crazy?”

Muskrat2

Yes, I am.  Crazy like a fox!

After making a couple of circles eying me, he cruised a few yards down the shoreline and stopped.  Crawled up on the bank and stood to catch my scent.  Shrugged his shoulders and swam off; at least as much as muskrats have shoulders.

He paddled back and forth in front of me several times over the next few hours.  We had a good conversation.  Actually, that is not true.  Oh, I spoke to Mr. Muskrat (I called him “Mister”, I have trapped muskrats in the spring, I know how mean and nasty they can be, knowing that, you call him “Mister”).  I talked with him quite a bit.  I often speak with critters while I am in the field or on the water, especially when I am by myself.  No, I am NOT crazy.  They have not started talking back to me. . . .

Yet.

Have a great weekend, get on the water and start up a conversation with a muskrat!  Maybe next time I will tell you about Beav and Otter!
