29 | P a g e g. Shoreline protection with the use of rock rip rap and offshore breakwater jetties to slow sedimentation Ownership: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Potential Partners: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Lower Platte South NRD, NGPC Wildlife Division, Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy. Holmes Lake (Lancaster County) An aquatic habitat project was completed with the City of Lincoln in 2004. There was a significant increase in fishing and public use on the area following this rehabilitation project and after decades of high use, several locations have been identified for improvements to better serve anglers. Goals: Access Tasks: a. Provide additional family-friendly fishing access through fishing pier construction. Ownership: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Potential Partners: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, City of Lincoln. Kirkman's Cove (Richardson County) Kirkman's Cove is a 160-acre reservoir managed by the Nemaha NRD, which was impounded in 1986. It has faced significant sedimentation and frequent issues with harmful blue-green algae. The Nemaha NRD is actively seeking funding for restoration efforts within the watershed and may also need to replace the existing outlet structure. If the NRD decides to dewater the reservoir, this would present an opportunity to chemically renovate the lake currently dominated by Common Carp. This project would also include sediment removal in the upper reaches and enhancements to angler access. The level of partnership and funding support would be dependent on implementation of a 5 mph, no-wake boating regulation to protect aquatic habitat and water quality improvements. Goals: Access, Habitat, Prevention Tasks: a. Reduce sedimentation rate to main reservoir with construction of a dike and sediment removal. b. Improve boat and kayak launching facilities. c. Improve shoreline access with bump outs, jetties and docks. d. Chemical renovation of fish population to improve sportfish populations. e. Enhance in-lake fish habitat using cedar trees and artificial structures. Ownership: Nemaha NRD Potential Partners: Nemaha NRD, Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy.
