Nebraska Birding Bowl a success
The first Nebraska Birding Bowl was an opportunity for birders of
all experience levels, including new ones, to contribute to birding
research in a fun — and competitive — way.
The event, which took place during Nebraska Bird Month in May,
challenged teams to record bird sightings through eBird for a chance
to win prizes. eBird is a community-science platform that uses
observations to inform bird conservation and contribute to research.
In all, 270 participants (192 adults and 78 youth) competed on 144
teams, contributing more than 2,900 eBird checklists and observing
more than 287 species. They also attended more than 28 in-person
or virtual Nebraska Bird Month events to learn about Nebraska's
incredible bird species.
As part of the program, many participants also donated to the
Nebraska Wildlife Conservation Fund, which supports a variety
of conservation efforts in Nebraska and funds Watchable Wildlife
Grants.
The Nebraska Birding Bowl was designed
to engage people in bird watching.
