he first U.S. military post west of the Missouri
River, Fort Atkinson was established in 1820
on the recommendation of the Lewis and Clark
Expedition. Located at present-day Fort Calhoun,
the fort was important to the early fur trade, river
travel and Indian relations. Today, the fort has
been reconstructed, and the site is recognized
as a National Historic Landmark where you can
learn more about life in the 1820s military and
see living history played out before your eyes.
VISITOR CENTER
The visitors center has been renovated and is
open. A grand reopening will be held during the
summer of 2023. Displays, artifacts and a theater
interpret the history and importance of the fort.
