L
ocated near Elyria, Fort Hartsuff is typical of a
Plains infantry outpost. It stood as a buffer
between settlers and Native Americans in the
North Loup River valley from 1874-81. Its nine
original buildings were built of lime-concrete mix,
which helped them withstand the passage of time.
In May of 1877, soldiers pioneered a new trail
from Grand Island to Deadwood, South Dakota.
Acquired as a historical park in 1961, it has been
restored as it was when soldiers patrolled the
Loup and Cedar river valleys. Group tours are
available by appointment.
