TEMPERATE BASS FAMILY FROM KEY 7 WHITE BASS Morone chrysops IDENTIFICATION Anal fi n spines stair stepped. Broken (interrupted) lateral lines. One tooth patch on tongue. INFORMATION Average size: • Average adult size is 10–15 inches. A master angler is 2.5 lb. or 17 inches. The Nebraska state record is 5 lb. Habitat: • Found in reservoirs, larger lakes and larger rivers. • Most often found in open water while seeking baitfi sh forage, but occasionally nearing shore. • Makes spawning runs up into rivers and streams. Range: • Most common in Platte and Republican River Valleys, and stocked larger reservoirs and lakes. FROM KEY 7 WHITE PERCH Morone Americana IDENTIFICATION Second and third anal spines same length. Sides nearly plain with faint stripes. INFORMATION Average size: • Average adult size is 7–10 inches in water bodies where the population is not stunted. Master Angler is 1 lb. or 12 inches. State record is 2 lbs. 6 oz. Habitat: • Found in reservoirs, lakes, pits and rivers. • Usually in open water, near the surface in large schools. Range: • Most common in lakes, and pits of the Central and Lower-Platte River Valley. NOTE: This fi sh is highly damaging to desired and native fi sh populations. It is illegal to transport live white perch away from the body of water where they were caught. 19 FISH KEY TEMPERATE BASS FAMILY
