Recreation 29 Nebraska Game and Parks Commission 2025 Annual Report In addition to serving the public, the Schramm treehouse classroom is a field trip destination for Nebraska students. JEFF KURRUS Schramm treehouse classroom Grand Opening On May 17, Schramm Park State Recreation Area celebrated the grand opening of its new treehouse classroom and interactive stream, part of the Outdoor Venture Parks public-private initiative. The treehouse classroom features treetop views, cozy nooks, natural materials and hands-on activities. The space is designed for pop-in visitors, as well as environmental education field trips, offering opportunities to explore nature-based activities, read, build with loose parts, or simply enjoy the treetop view. Below the treehouse, Canyon Ponds were renovated to include a wetland area, interactive stream, and upgraded trout pond. Visitors can wade and explore the meandering stream, while improved boardwalks and accessible natural spaces enhance the experience. One park visitor shared: "We believe the commitment that Parks, donors, the community, and volunteers made to improve Schramm is a huge inspiration to all of us who visit state parks. … I honestly see Schramm as evolving in line with doing what is right with state parks." Casting a line across Nebraska In 2025, nearly 250,000 adults purchased a fishing permit, spending countless hours enjoying Nebraska's lakes, rivers and streams. Youth 15 and younger — who fish for free — also joined in, discovering the joys of casting a line and exploring the outdoors. Nebraska Game and Parks works year-round to ensure these opportunities are available. We manage healthy fish populations, maintain barrier-free fishing areas, and provide programs that connect families with fishing. Revenue from these permits directly supports these efforts, helping sustain recreational fishing for all. Nebraskans found plenty of opportunities to fish across the state, including here at Lake Ogallala State Recreation Area. ERIC FOWLER The Schramm treehouse classroom opened in 2025. GAFFER PHOTOGRAPHY DID YOU KNOW? Sixty-three of Nebraska's 78 state park, state recreation area and state historical parks offer fishing opportunities.
