Recreation 28 Nebraska Game and Parks Commission 2025 Annual Report New lake expands outdoor opportunities Forest City Recreation Area opened to the public in 2025, giving Gretna and nearby communities a new place to fish, paddle, hike and picnic. At the heart of the 80-acre site is a 15-acre no-wake lake, designed for safe, family-friendly recreation. Nebraska Game and Parks supported the $12 million project with technical guidance and a $350,000 Sportfish Restoration grant, helping fund accessible fishing piers, a kayak launch and restrooms. The grant also supported in-lake habitat features that nurture healthy bass, bluegill and channel catfish populations, while upstream water-quality basins help keep the lake clean — blending recreation with environmental stewardship. Led by the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resource District, the project shows how thoughtful planning can combine flood mitigation with meaningful outdoor experiences. Game and Parks continues its partnership with the NRD on three additional reservoir projects, ensuring more Nebraskans can safely and accessibly connect with nature. The Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan is the blueprint that guides outdoor recreation projects across the state. JULIE GEISER Shaping outdoor recreation development In 2025, Nebraska Game and Parks finalized and submitted the 2026-2030 Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan, a five-year blueprint guiding outdoor recreation across the state. SCORP evaluates trends in recreation, analyzes state and regional demographics, and provides guidance for developing and improving parks, trails, playgrounds and aquatic centers. The plan also helps Nebraska remain eligible for federal Land and Water Conservation Fund grants, which have contributed more than $60 million to local outdoor projects since 1964. Developed with public input and the expertise of recreation professionals, SCORP equips communities with data and guidance to expand access, enhance quality and preserve Nebraska's outdoor spaces. With this road map in place, Nebraska Game and Parks is poised to help strengthen communities and ensure high-quality, accessible recreation for all Nebraskans. Campaign encourages people to get outdoors The 2025 Beneath Nebraska Skies campaign made it easier than ever for Nebraskans to get outside and explore. A new tool helped visitors quickly find the right park to visit based on where they live, the type of adventure they want, and the time they have. The campaign drove $1.5 million in revenue through fishing and park permits and park reservations while giving people personalized, hassle-free ways to plan their outdoor adventures.
