18 Nebraska Game and Parks Commission • 2018-2022 Focus on the Future Maintaining diverse fish and wildlife populations and their habitats will help defend against impending threats and provide wide-ranging recreational opportunities. Basing decisions on the best available science and technologies, and the desires of our users in a fiscally responsible manner will most effectively meet the goal of providing benefits for the resources and the people. Climate and land-use change—among other threats—will challenge our ability to meet wildlife resource goals while balancing needs of the public. Part of that balance is assisted by the many conservation partnerships that our agency has fostered. Providing adequate conservation and management for fish and wildlife for public use and enjoyment will continue to be a challenge. strategies strategic directions Use the best available science to guide our actions for fish and wildlife resources. GOAL 4: : Manage wildlife resources for the benefits of the people and the resources. Identify and prioritize research needs that will best inform agency wildlife and management questions. Engage state, regional and national partners regarding monitoring and research on wildlife/fish disease. Monitor and implement control measures in regards to wildlife/fish diseases and invasive species. Produce big horn sheep disease response plan. Craft tactical plan for mule deer management. Create library of best management practices for programs identified as greatest in need. Position Nebraska as a destination of choice for upland game birds, trophy fish, wildlife viewing and big game. Develop protocol for establishing research priorities with staff and partners to follow the strategic themes identified in strategic plan. Create strategic plan to identify and prioritize urban and rural fishing opportunities. Assess fish production and future needs/focus areas. Expand methods to reach constituencies and garner stakeholder input. Market Nebraska as a great destination for diverse outdoor experiences. Evaluate and assess Recruitment Development Retention Plan and efforts. Use location-based digital marketing strategies (e.g. geofencing). Manage and enhance the lands and landscapes for both game and nongame species with the understanding that people have varying levels of support and appreciation for each. Continue to develop the public's understanding of fish and wildlife resources, and user activities. (continued on next page)
