36 | P a g e Big Bordeaux Creek (Dawes County) Big Bordeaux Creek is one of the few public fishing areas that contains over 2 miles of cool water stream access. A previous project, completed on the upper portion of the stream in 2022, was designed to improve connectivity to the flood plain, increase stream habitat for trout and improve angler access. Continued investment into the lower portion of the stream will depend on the development of alternative funding sources. Goals: Habitat, Access, Evaluation Tasks: a. Evaluate instream habitat project completed on areas 1 and 2 to determine if these techniques would be applicable to areas 3 and 4. b. Improve stream connectivity to the flood plain. c. Increase stream access by providing additional parking areas. Ownership: NGPC Potential Partners: NGPC CWS funds, Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy, NGPC Wildlife Division Box Butte Reservoir SRA/WMA (Dawes County) Box Butte Reservoir is a 1,600-acre irrigation reservoir with drastic drawdowns. Bank access is very limited due to abundance of downed timber on the west and invasive vegetation along the shoreline. During extreme draw downs on drought years, limited wood and rock habitat is available in the reservoir. Several locations around the SRA and WMA are eroding during periods of high water and need additional bank stabilization. Goals: Habitat, Access Tasks: a. Clear down timbers and move brush piles to deeper water elevations for habitat during irrigation drawdowns. b. Reduce shoreline erosion with rip rap and jetties around the SRA. c. Improve shoreline access with bump outs, jetties and docks. Ownership: Bureau of Reclamation Potential Partners: Upper Niobrara River NRD, NGPC Parks and Wildlife Divisions, Bureau of Reclamation. Dave's Lake (Cottonwood-Steverson WMA) (Cherry County) Dave's Lake is a 50-acre wetland on the east edge of the Cottonwood-Steverson Lake complex and is connected to Steverson Lake by a narrow ditch. Currently, these lakes have poor aquatic habitat and water quality due to the presence of Common Carp. This project aims to create a barrier to isolate Dave's Lake so the fishery can be managed separately.
