14 2024 Annual Report • Recreation Fort Robinson's 150th anniversary commemoration Fort Robinson celebrated its 150th anniversary this year, refl ecting on its history as a vital military outpost on the American frontier. Established in 1874, the fort played a pivotal role in American history from the Sioux War through World War II. The fort was the site of the tragic Cheyenne Breakout, as well as the death of the legendary Lakota leader, Crazy Horse. To mark this anniversary, Fort Robinson hosted a special event, where more than 1,000 spectators were enchanted by historical reenactments that brought the past to life, showcasing the fort's history, from cavalry exercises by Buff alo Soldiers of the American West reenactors to World War II-era military dog demonstrations. Additionally, an exhibition featuring artifacts and rare photographs was unveiled, off ering deeper insights into the lives of those who lived and served at the fort. To celebrate its sesquicentennial, the park hosted events that honored the fort's storied past and celebrated its enduring legacy. Festivities included historical reenactments, expert insights, and guided tours, all designed to provide participants with an immersive experience of life at Fort Hartsuff during its operational years. These events not only commemorated the fort's historical signifi cance but also reinforced our commitment to preserving and interpreting Nebraska's heritage sites for future generations.
