estern history buffs will want to visit this
unique area 6 miles east of Fairbury. It was
here that James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok began
his notorious career, when he gunned down
station owner David McCanles. Ruts of westbound
wagons are still visible at this one-time stage,
Pony Express, wagon train and freighter stop on
the Oregon-California Trail. Ranch buildings have
been reconstructed.
VISITOR CENTER
Exhibits, artifacts and a theater interpret the
history of the area. Grounds are open daily until
sundown. The visitor center is open mid-April
through mid-October. Off-season tours may be
arranged by contacting the park in advance.
CAMPING
The adjoining Rock Creek Station SRA offers
Electric and Basic camping including modern
restrooms, showers, drinking water and a
dump-and-fill station. An equestrian campground
has Basic camping and 20 individual corrals,
water, picnic tables, grills and a day-use horse
staging area. There are 8 miles of scenic trails.
