BASS & CRAPPIE FAMILY FROM KEY 6 FROM KEY 6 LARGEMOUTH BASS Micropterus salmoides IDENTIFICATION Upper jaw extends beyond rear margin of eye. Dorsal fi n almost divided. Greenish brown with dark middle horizontal stripe. INFORMATION Average size: • Average adult size is 12–17 inches. A master angler is 20 inches or 5 lbs. The state record largemouth weighed in at 10 lbs. 11 oz. Habitat: • Prefers warm, quiet water. • Often found near structure (like fl ooded timber and brush piles) and vegetation waiting for prey at the edge of underwater ledges and drop-off s into deeper water. • Largemouth bass are sight feeders, and are most successful at fi nding prey in clear water. Range: • Statewide, very common. SMALLMOUTH BASS Micropterus dolomieu IDENTIFICATION Upper jaw does not extend beyond the rear margin of eye. Has continual dorsal fi n. Golden brown color with irregular vertical bars. INFORMATION Average size: • Average adult size is 10–15 inches. A master angler is 18 inches or 3 lbs. The state is 7 lbs. 4 oz. Habitat: • Prefers cool and clear water. • Often found near structure (like rock shorelines and in-stream boulders and brush). • Smallmouth bass are sight feeders, and are most successful in clear water.
