LARGEMOUTH BASS

INFORMATION
Average size:

Average adult size is 12–17 inches. A master angler is 20 inches or 5 lbs. The state record largemouth
weighed in at 10 lbs. 11 oz.
Habitat:
•
Prefers warm, quiet water.
•
Often found near structure (like fl ooded timber and brush piles) and vegetation waiting for prey at the
edge of underwater ledges and drop-off s into deeper water.
•
Largemouth bass are sight feeders, and are most successful at fi nding prey in clear water.
Range:
•
Statewide, very common.
SMALLMOUTH BASS

Has continual dorsal fi n.
Golden brown color with irregular vertical bars.
INFORMATION
Average size:

Average adult size is 10–15 inches. A master angler is 18 inches or 3 lbs. The state is 7 lbs. 4 oz.
Habitat:
•
Prefers cool and clear water.
•
Often found near structure (like rock shorelines and in-stream boulders and brush).
•
Smallmouth bass are sight feeders, and are most successful in clear water.
Range:
•
Most common in upper Missouri River, Lake McConaughy and central Platte Valley.
