TROUT FAMILY FROM KEY 2 RAINBOW TROUT Oncorhynchus mykiss IDENTIFICATION Small black spots cover tail and dorsal fi ns. Pink band on sides. INFORMATION Average size: • Average adult size is 8–15 inches, but can grow quite large in good habitat. A master angler is 23 inches or 5 lbs. The Nebraska state record is 14 lbs. 2 oz. Habitat: • Requires cold, well-oxygenated water; can't survive in extended periods in water temperatures over 70 degrees. Can survive year-round in the cold water streams of western and north-central Nebraska. Range: • Statewide. Stocked in many lakes and city ponds annually. FROM KEY 2 BROWN TROUT Salmo trutta IDENTIFICATION Prominent spots on back and sides, often red or green and accented with halos. Tail is generally free of spots. INFORMATION Average size: • Average adult size is 8–15 inches, but can grow quite large in good habitat. A master angler is 22 inches or 4 lbs. The Nebraska state record is 20 lbs. 1 oz. Habitat: • Requires cold, well-oxygenated water; can't survive in extended periods in water temperatures over 70 degrees. Can survive year-round in the cold water streams of western and north-central Nebraska. Range: • Uncommon. Found in coldwater streams of western and north central Nebraska. 11 FISH KEY TROUT FAMILY
