Barbels on each corner of the mouth.
Heavy spine at front of dorsal and
anal fi n. Gold to brown color with large scales.
INFORMATION
Average size:
•
Average adult size is 12–24 inches, but can get quite large. A master angler is 32 inches or 15 lbs.
The Nebraska state record is 50 lbs, 5 oz.
Habitat:
•
Present in most aquatic habitats where they have been introduced.
•
Most abundant in shallow areas of reservoirs during warmer months
•
Can become overabundant and destroy water quality and aquatic vegetation habitat. Do not move live
fi sh from one lake to another
Range:
•
Statewide, very common in lakes and rivers

NORTHERN PIKE
Esox Lucius
IDENTIFICATION
Large duck-bill shaped mouth
with many sharp teeth. Long and slender body.
One rounded dorsal fi n hear the tail.
Similar to less common muskellunge Esox maquinogy, but northern pikes entire cheek is scaled.

Average adult size is 15–24 inches, but can get quite large. A master angler is 36 inches or 10 lbs.
The Nebraska state record is 30 lbs, 1 oz.
Habitat:
•
Found in cold and cool water lakes and rivers. Does not do well in warm water.
•
Usually associated with vegetation and habitat used to ambush prey.
Range:
•
Primarily found in northern and western parts of Nebraska. Stocked in reservoirs and lakes statewide.
