FROM KEY 6 REDEAR SUNFISH Lepomis microlophus IDENTIFICATION Gill cover tab black with red fringe. Lacking black dorsal spot found on bluegill. INFORMATION Average size: • Average adult size is 6–8 inches. A master angler is 1 lb. or 10 inches. The Nebraska state record is 1 lb. 14 oz. Habitat: • Found mostly in ponds, and reservoirs. • Can tolerate turbidity, but prefers clearer and cooler conditions. • Will be found in the same habitats and occurs alongside bluegill, but usually at much lower densities. Range: • Statewide, sporadically. FROM KEY 6 ROCK BASS Ambloplites rupestis IDENTIFICATION Has red eye. Six spines in anal fi n. Brassy color with dark spots forming rows on sides. INFORMATION Average size: • Average adult size is 6–8 inches. A master angler is 1 lb. or 11 inches. The Nebraska state record is 1 lb. 8 oz. Habitat: • Found in streams, canals, ponds, and sandpits. • Does best in clear water with abundant cover. Seldom strays from cover habitat. Range: • Statewide, sporadically.
