FROM KEY 6 BLACK AND WHITE CRAPPIE Pomoxis nigromaculatus and Pomoxis annularis resp. IDENTIFICATION Black; usually 7–8 dorsal fi n spines, mottled coloring on sides. White; usually 5–6 dorsal fi n spines, vertical bars on sides. INFORMATION Average size: • Average adult size is 9–10 inches, but master angler fi sh measuring 15 inches, or weighing 2 lbs, are regularly caught in some Nebraska reservoirs and ponds. The Nebraska state record is 4 lb. 8 oz. (black), 4 lb. 1 oz. (white). Habitat: • Prefer water with aquatic vegetation and underwater structure such as logs, rock or dead trees. • Can be found in shaded water under overhanging trees. • In the heat of summer, will move to deeper water. • Black crappie prefer clearer, quieter water. • White crappie are more tolerant of turbidity.
