Two Rivers State Recreation Area was
established in 1960 by the NGPC and provides
many recreation activities, including camping,
fishing, hunting, wildlife viewing, and swimming,
and is named after its location at the confluence
of the Platte River and Elkhorn River. Because of
its location, the recreation area resides within
floodplain, wetlands, and flooded cottonwood
stands, providing a unique landscape to
encourage outdoor discovery for park users.
The large population of Omaha is a short
distance from the recreation area, which
provides a diverse audience the opportunity
to escape into nature. The City of Omaha has
ties to the Union Pacific Railroad and a novel
idea in the 1980s incorporated decommissioned
cabooses into cabins, connecting the City
and recreation area. The design and theme
of the natural playground was inspired by the
ecology, habitat, and unique caboose cabins
within the park for children and their parents to
experience in a different way.
