OCTOBER Early October • Look for mushrooms, including turkey tail, chicken of the woods, giant puffballs and oyster, as well as black walnut, hazelnut, chestnut and hickory tree nuts, in eastern Nebraska in the fall. Late-October • Check out the schedule for youth pheasant hunts across the state. Visit Nebraskapf.com for details. • Sight in rifles for deer season. • Go on a drive to see autumn's arrival. Fall colors are cascading across the state from the northwest to the southeast, particularly along the Missouri River corridor. Hotspots for hikers, bikers and vehicle viewers include Ponca, Indian Cave, Eugene T. Mahoney and Platte River state parks. Fort Kearny Hike/Bike trail, Johnson Lake SRA trail, Smith Falls SP and Fort Robinson SP also have spectacular displays. PHOTO BY JEFF KURRUS PHOTO BY ERIC FOWLER
