Nebraskaland magazine's • A YEAR OUTDOORS 15 SEPTEMBER Early September • Visit Grove Lake in northeastern Nebraska for a combo trip of mourning dove, squirrel, white- tailed deer, rabbit, pike fishing and fly rod trout fishing at Verdigre Creek. • Find a public location that has doves on it. • Fish the fall walleye bite at lakes across the state, including traditional hotspots Lake McConaughy, Merritt, Sutherland Reservoir, Lake Maloney and Sherman Reservoir state recreation areas. Mid-September through October • Visit areas with elk populations to hear the majestic elk bugle. Elk let out these calls as challenges to other bulls during the breeding season. Good places to hear them are from high points along county roads in the Pine Ridge and Wildcat Hills, especially near crop fields where herds are feeding at night. Late-September through October • Go clamming if southwest reservoirs are lowered for maintenance on boat ramps, shore lines and docks. Locations include Lake Maloney Reservoir SRA, Jeffrey Lake WMA and Johnson Lake SRA. Clams can also be found in the Tri- County Canal system if water levels are drawn down, and provide an interesting meal when purged several days before cooking. • Put out feeders to attract migrating hummingbirds. • Attend the Missouri River Expo at Ponca State Park, where more than 85 hands-on outdoor activities are featured. • Get yourself and your dogs in shape for upcoming upland and waterfowl seasons. • Net crawdads if there are water draw-downs on the canal system, which normally stretches from Paxton to North Platte. Visit Nppd.com for draw-down dates. PHOTO BY JUSTIN HAAG PHOTO BY ERIC FOWLER PHOTO BY ERIC FOWLER PHOTO BY JULIE GEISER PHOTO BY JEFF KURRUS PHOTO BY JENNY NGUYEN-WHEATLEY
