The project is restoring grassland, wetland, and native stream ecosystems, while supporting resilient ranching communities. The original habitat goal for this project was Eastern red cedar removal. As of fall 2025, more than 55,000 acres of Eastern red cedar have been mechanically removed, and prescribed fire applied to an additional 2,069.5 acres. About 285 acres of wetland and stream also have been restored toward a goal of 640 restored acres. About $1.68 million has been spent, with 95% of project funds obligated, including over $1.25 million for grassland restoration. Nearly 30 organizations are actively contributing to the grant-funded initiative. These efforts are improving habitat on private lands for at-risk species, such as the greater prairie-chicken, long-billed curlew, and American burying beetle. They also advance grassland conservation and Nebraska Natural Legacy goals through locally led, landscape-scale restoration and connectivity. The Nebraska Natural Legacy Plan was adopted in 2025 for the next 10 years to ensure action steps are taken to protect at-risk species.
