Overnight visitors to Fort Robinson State Park may notice a special touch to their rooms this summer.
The park, with its historical lodging facilities that once housed Cavalry soldiers and officers, has begun a new project to feature the work of quilters from Nebraska and the surrounding region. The park is seeking at least 30 quilts to be placed on beds in two of its officers’ quarters — the big brick buildings at the west end of its horseshoe drive that are popular for families and other large groups.
Becky Serres, an assistant superintendent at the park, sent letters to shops and stores last year requesting donated quilts. So far, four have answered the call and she’s hoping more will arrive before May 15 as the park prepares for its many activities to kick into full gear.
“This is a great way for talented quilters to show off their work and help put their mark on Fort Robinson,” Serres said. “It will provide a special touch to the rooms and help quilters build a connection with our park.”
Quilts are reminiscent of bedding that would have been in use when the fort was an active U.S. Cavalry post in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Few restrictions are in place for the donated quilts, and a wide variety of designs will be accepted. Each quilt must cover a queen-sized bed, ranging from 90-102 inches wide and 102-118 long. Also, to ensure proper credit is given to the quilters, each should have a tag denoting who created it.
Completed quilts may be mailed to Serres at Fort Robinson State Park, 3200 Hwy 20, Crawford, NE 69339. More information may be obtained by contacting her at becky.serres@nebraska.gov or 308-665-2933.
