McConaughy Spinnerbait Trolling

I love to see Nebraska waters on fishing shows, and every time I find one I can share with you, you can count on my doing just that.  The most recent one I am aware of is by The Next Bite TV.  They did an episode last year on McConaughy highlighting a very unique presentation for catching walleyes, a presentation that originated in Nebraska!  Here is is, watch it, watch it all!

The anglers in the show are professional walleye angler Gary Parsons and Nebraska guide and tournament angler Ben Garver.  I love this particular show not just because it highlights some of the fantastic fishing we have in Nebraska, but because those two guys are excellent anglers and they do a great job explaining what they are doing, how they are doing it and why it works!  By the way, if you want to fish with Ben sometime and learn a whole lot more, check out Nebraska Walleye Guide.

I have rambled about fishing presentations before, baits, lures, lines, rods, reels, boats, etc., etc., etc.  There are a million baits and lures an angler can use and all of them will catch fish when used in the right place at the right time.  Each bait or lure, presentation method, is just a different tool for different fishing situations.  The key is choosing the right tool for the “job”.

The spinnerbaits used in that episode of The Next Bite are classically thought of as bass baits, but that is exactly why I believe it teaches so much!  You talk about applying the right tool for the situation!  It just goes to show that if you look at baits and lures as tools and how you can use those tools on the water, you can catch more and bigger fish.  Spinnerbaits are THE tool for fishing through cover, through woody cover in particular.  Resourceful Nebraska walleye anglers then figured out how to get that tool with its flash and vibration down to the tops of flooded trees in our reservoirs where walleyes and other predator fish were lurking.  Sometimes it requires thinking outside the box!

Ben and I will be at the fishing kick-off seminar in York tonight, Let’s Talk Fishing!.  If you want to hear more talk about this topic, and much more, show up!
