The LAUNCH is the transition from dry land to water. River conditions can continually change, and accidents may be likely to occur here. Design consideration should focus on stable surfaces with slopes and widths that meet the needs of intended users. Both in-bound and out-bound parties may simultaneously share the launch area. The APPROACH is where people encounter the riverbank, while transferring their watercraft and gear to the launch. Design consideration should focus on safe and clearly defined paths with slopes and widths that meet the needs of intended users. The approach should be constructed of materials that can be cleared of sediment deposited during high river flow events without damage to the surrounding area. The ARRIVAL is the transition from the public roadway to the water trail access. Clearly defined vehicle circulation and loading and staging areas should be carefully designed to efficiently facilitate people as they prepare for a day on the water. APPROACH ARRIVAL LAUNCH 24 Nebraska Game and Parks Commission • Floating The Good Life DESIGN For as many behaviors and characteristics that are attributed to Nebraska's waterways, so too are the design opportunities in developing a means to access that water. There are commonalities that should be considered in every access solution; however, there is no "one size fits all" for every project. It is essential to understand the behavioral characteristics regarding your specific river or lake, as well as the location on the embankment that the access is to be located. Anticipate the influences the waterway will have on the design, construction methods, and long-term sustainability of the project. The design examples provided in this guide are an introduction of elements that should be incorporated into a water trail access. Several topics are addressed regarding spatial recommendations, material selections, and relationships between amenities to aid in determining what is best suited for your project. It is recommended, and in many cases required, that you engage a qualified Nebraska registered professional design consultant (civil engineer or landscape architect) to facilitate design and construction detailing of the project. Utilize this guide to equip you as the project stakeholders to collaborate with your selected design consultants in arriving at a successful outcome. We have separated the design of a launch site into three categories: ARRIVAL, APPROACH and LAUNCH. These categories, when properly planned and designed, will be able to come together into one cohesive solution that will create a positive user experience. Figure 6 illustrates these three components and the aspects that are part of them. Figure 6: Arrival, Approach and Launch
