14 Nebraska Game and Parks Commission • 2017 State Water Trails Guide W A T E R W A Y B E H A V I O R S Part of the planning process is learning the behavior of the waterway on which you want to locate a water trail. It is important to have a good understanding of how the water behaves to provide a good recreational opportunity. Water is a dynamic element within our environment that is influenced by natural or manmade causes, which can vary depths and reshape embankments over time. Understanding how our waterways behave is critical to protecting them while using them for recreation. Nebraska rivers are diverse systems influenced by topographic, ecologic, and climatic factors. Rivers respond to these factors in their own way. We can better determine how to use our waterways in a beneficial manner by understanding how these dynamic systems function. While lakes and rivers behave differently, paddlers should respect the power and energy they possess if they are to navigate these waterways safely and enjoyably. Fast-moving shallow water can be just as dangerous as deep, calm water, and knowing how to handle a boat in varying conditions is critical. Enjoy our waterways with responsible mindfulness and preparedness. The first step to creating a successful paddling adventure is getting to know your waterways. KAYAKING ON THE NIOBRARA RIVER
