As stewards of the natural world, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission knows change is constant. Focus on the Future is a planning document that will guide our path into the future. Our world may be ever changing, but our mission is not. Since the first iteration of the commission was established in 1879, we have remained stewards of the state's fish, wildlife, park and outdoor recreation resources in the best long-term interests of the people and those resources. While our methods have greatly evolved over the years, our dedication to conserving our wildlife and wild places and to outdoor recreation has remained unwavering. This strategic plan focuses on broad goals and objectives that position the agency to meet public needs, while addressing key challenges and issues regarding the natural resources we manage. The plan is a living document that will evolve as we move forward. The public has entrusted us to manage the state's natural resources over the long-term. We strive to put those natural resources above short-term interests and ensure work is done with excellence using the best scientific knowledge and management practices, while maintaining fiscal responsibility. We also are growing our outreach and education programs to build a conservation-minded and engaged citizenry that will help ensure our wildlife and wild places are valued. Our partnerships, our work with people of all ages for expanded outdoor learning, and our reputation as a great place for outdoor recreation make me optimistic that our future is one in which Nebraska is forever home to diverse wildlife, healthy habitats, natural beauty and endless opportunities for those who choose to spend their time outdoors. There is plenty of work to be done, and we are up to the task. James N. Douglas Director from the director
