Just a Leaf
s NEBRASKAland photographers, it's an understatement to say that we shoot a
lot of photos. Some find their way to print. Most don't. That's part of the reason
I try to post photos to social media as I go along. Through that venue, at least my
friends get to see them before they're filed away to collect "cyberdust" in a digital
When I hastily posted the above photo with the caption, "Just a leaf," I received a
Facebook reply from my friend Joyce Hardy, a college biology professor. Her comment:
"Not just a leaf! An amazingly crafted factory that functions very effectively for
photosynthesis! Now that it is done, the plant is recapturing all nutrients possible. The lack
of chlorophyll production allows these beautiful carotenoids to show through. They were
there, but hidden by the green chlorophyll before. Great picture!"
My science-minded friend's comment served as a reminder that in matters of nature there's
always much more to it than what meets the eye. Much more than just a leaf, indeed.
