Whistle or Bell – Every vessel of classes 1, 2, 3, and 4 shall have a whistle or other
mechanical sound -producing device. Every mechanically powered boat of Class 4 shall
be equipped with a bell.
Flame Arrestor – Every motorboat with an inboard motor using gasoline shall have the
carburetor equipped with an efficient flame arrestor or similar device that meets U.S.
Coast Guard approval.
Ventilation – Every motorboat using gas, except those of open construction, shall have
a prescribed venting system for bilges and the fuel tank compartment.
LIGHTING
All vessels in use from sunset to sunrise shall display lights as specified. No other lights
may be used, except a spotlight for difficult navigation.
• Every white light prescribed shall
be visible at a distance of at least
2 miles.
• Every colored light prescribed
shall be visible at a distance of
at least 1 mile, showing green
to starboard and red to port and
screened to show from dead
ahead to 22.5 degrees rearward
on the respective side.
• All mechanically powered
sailboats shall display the
lights required for that class of
mechanically powered boat.
• All motorboats and sailboats
shall carry a lantern or flashlight
for emergencies.
• All anchored vessels shall
display the 360-degree white
light, except while anchored in a
docking or anchorage area.
