48 | P a g e Goose Lake (Holt County) Goose Lake is a 300-surface acre Sandhills lake located in southern Holt County 24 miles south of O'Neill. The subject of three fish renovations beginning in 1990 and a rehab project in 2001, the lake is a dynamic Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, Yellow Perch, and Bluegill fishery, if Common Carp are not present. A series of barriers are in place to attempt to keep the lake free from Common Carp. The latest project involved the placement of two overflow structures on the main berm to prevent backup flooding and therefore rough fish recontamination. Currently, two of the berms have settled and need to be maintained and hybrid cattails are encroaching around the lake, growing to depths of 5 feet which is impeding angler access. Goals: Habitat, Access, Prevention Tasks: a. Conduct maintenance on two berms to bring them back to the original specifications and elevations. b. Conduct chemical cattail control, possibly utilizing helicopter and drone applications to maintain angler access. c. Maintain pump and well as needed to mitigate drought years and prevent winterkill. Ownership: NGPC Potential Partners: NGPC Wildlife Division Gracie Creek Pond (Loup County) Constructed in 1985, this 2-acre, cold-water pond was created by a road grade structure on Gracie Creek. Located on the northwest corner of Calamus Reservoir, the pond has become a trout fishing destination for both local anglers and the many visitors to Calamus SRA. The pond is plagued by damage from high water events and continual sedimentation from the stream. Complete re-builds of the pond have occurred three times since initial construction. A sediment basin was created in 2022 and requires the removal of 2,000 to 3,000 cubic yards every two to three years. Goals: Habitat, Access Tasks: a. Excavate 2,000 to 3,000 cubic yards of sand in 2–3-year intervals to maintain depth in main pond basin. b. Conduct annual emergent and terrestrial vegetation control to maintain access. Ownership: Bureau of Reclamation Potential Partners: NGPC Wildlife Division, Nebraska Department of Transportation, Bureau of Reclamation.
